Why Female Fronted was created
Female Fronted was originally created by Rhona Melsky who collaborated with two friends and professionals: Mary Jo Scibetta, a graphic designer and art director, and Melissa Slavsky. The idea languished and died when Mary Jo suddenly passed away from cancer in 2016. Rhona continued to have it at the back of her mind over the past couple years.
As a self-proclaimed feminist since before she even knew the word, she saw how women’s issues were continually becoming more and more prevalent. But she also saw that women just continue to do amazing things and wanted those amazing things to be celebrated by women, as well as everyone else. “I think women talk about standing with one another and lifting each other up,” Rhona said. “But sometimes it’s just talk. We really just need to do it now more than ever.”
After years of writing and editing, Rhona finally invested in a decent camera and used her good eye for photography to add to her work as a journalist. “I started to follow Liza Colby Sound, a New York City-based band. When I first saw the band, I was blown away by Colby’s voice. But her energy and skills onstage remind me much of Tina Turner and a little Iggy Pop. She put the spark back in me to restart Female Fronted. I knew I had to get it up and running to showcase women and to do it in memory of Mary Jo. And here we are.” Rhona is thrilled that Melissa Slavsky of Compassionate Digital, who was one of the original co-founders, is on board and now serves as digital marketing advisor while Michelle Lagos is now their website designer/developer of Lagos Consulting LLC.
Female Fronted is about women and those who self-identify as women. It's not necessarily what you think. Sure, we write about women fronting bands, but we're much more. It's how we rock in whatever we do in life.
